The Loopthing OpenScore – Static vs Dynamic Score
Date posted: November 06, 2009
The OpenScore is a direct measurement of the online presence and success of a company over a period of time. It is calculated by extracting the average of the dynamic and the static score of a company over a 30 day period.
Below you will see the main differences between these two types of scores.
The sources
We are fetching information from various 3rd party sites. The way we calculate and weight the information we’re collecting from these sites is proprietary, confidential and requires continuous assessment. But, in terms of informing you about how your company’s online presence performs and how it should be improved, we won’t be that discreet.
Here is a list of the sites we’re currently fetching information from, in order to produce the OpenScore that is available for you right now.
- Alexa
- Bing
- Compete
- Digg
- Flickr
- Twitpic
- Viddler
- Vimeo
- Yahoo
- YouTube
The static score
The static score is comprised by the information extracted from a few different sources, and it is calculated once a week. The extracted information is usually information which doesn’t change very often and it’s not variable over a short period of time.
E.g. the number of backlinks inside Google’s search engine. This value doesn’t change too often considering the amount of time it takes Google to update this information.
The dynamic score
The dynamic score reflects the activity of a business in more dynamic environments, where constant activity monitoring is required (e.g. posting updates on Twitter, or the growth in views for a viral YouTube video).
This score is calculated once a day, or even more often in order to reflect the current status of the company’s involvement with the monitored 3rd party websites. The data we’re extracting is compared with what we have already recorded in order to decide if the dynamic score changes in a positive direction.
The OpenScore graph
Here are some characteristics of the OpenScore graph:
- Because the static score is calculated once a week, the static OpenScore graph doesn’t have major fluctuations compared to the dynamic score which changes on a daily basis.
- There is no negative value for the static or the dynamic scores.
- Data can be visually or data served chronologically starting from the 27th of October, 2009
- A detailed breakdown of each analyzed service component is soon to be available within the premium OpenScore features on Loopthing.
